Kevin / Leyla Fletcher

Kevin / Leyla Fletcher, a violent male who identifies as a trans woman, of Salford, Greater Manchester pleaded guilty to assault of a paramedic in September 2014. Fletcher struck the paramedic on the head with a shampoo bottle before kicking out and hitting him in the shin. At the time of the attack, Fletcher was known as Kevin.

Local media reported that Fletcher, 36, had been attempting to undergo gender reassignment surgery for the last 12 years and after several failed attempts had begun binge drinking to cope with the emotional distress.

Despite having a previous conviction for assault, Fletcher was given a three year conditional discharge by magistrates and ordered to pay £200 compensation to the victim, as well as £85 costs and a £25 victim surcharge. Chairman of the bench, Terri Farrow, acknowledged the offence would normally carry a prison sentence.

A spokesperson for the Ambulance Service, Derek Cartwright said: “The Trust is extremely disappointed with the sentence given to the perpetrator in this instance.”
