Rhi Grugel
Rhi Grugel, a violent male who identifies as a transgender woman, was convicted at Wirral magistrates court in December 2022 of affray. Grugel, 20, was sentenced to 20 weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months and was ordered to complete 40 hours unpaid work.
Together with co-accused Armani McShane, 18, Grugel viciously attacked a group of strangers in a nightclub after allegedly hearing ”laughter and comments”, immediately becoming verbally abusive and then hurling glasses and objects, punching and kicking other patrons and throwing a woman to the floor.
Grugel was ordered to pay £150 to Amy Hughes for the cut to her face from a glass candle holder (for which she needed hospital treatment and now has a permanent scar), £75 to Lucy Alcock “for pulling her hair and bruising” and £50 to Lewis Rourke “who was punched in the face”.
Sentencing Grugel and McShane, chair of the bench Rose Egan said: ‘This was an extremely nasty and prolonged incident. I have to say you could have ended up going to prison today. As it is you have certainly lost your good character.
Headlines in The Sun and Daily Star referred to the attack as having been perpetrated by two women, though at least did mention in the article that Grugel is a trans-identified male.
