Hannah Walters/Tarjit Singh, a violent female who identifies as a trans man, was convicted in May 2022 at Snaresbrook Crown Court of three counts of assault by penetration, six counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of making a threat to kill.

Walters/Singh, 34, was sentenced to ten years in prison in July 2022.

The offending took place over six years between 2010 and 2016 and all three female victims were young and vulnerable, including a girl in care who had just turned 16 and was estranged from her family after being previously sexually abused. The first victim was approached via Facebook and third victim met Walters/Singh after receiving a message through the dating website Plenty of Fish in 2014. All were threatened, abused and tricked into believing Walters/Singh to be be male via the use of a prosthetic penis. One victim had her nose fractured and was doused with lighter fluid and threatened with being set alight.

The judge said Walters/Singh had been “aware that these women were vulnerable” and had deceived them by “not truly revealing” being born biologically female. Singh even told one victim they had been born male, had a sex change to become female, and now wanted to be male again. The victim realised this was untrue after a transgender storyline in the soap opera Hollyoaks and she realised that Singh didn’t have any scars to indicate surgery.

In a victim impact statement, one of the victims said she suffers from PTSD, anxiety, and questions whether she should be alive as she struggles with what happened to her. She is scared of new people and the relationship with her new partner has been affected.

The court heard that Walters/Singh also has multiple previous convictions including false imprisonment, perverting the course of justice, administering a noxious substance, having a Taser, going equipped, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Specifically, Walters/Singh was convicted in 2009 of assault and false imprisonment, where a woman was lured to Singh’s flat and brutally assaulted and in 2016, Walters/Singh was sentenced to more than seven years in prison after an offence where a man was drugged after being targeted over Plenty of Fish.

All headlines referred to Walters/Singh as a ‘Transgender man’ unlike how (the much more common) male transgender offenders are routinely referred to as ‘Woman’ (rather than as ‘Transgender woman’).

*Update July 2024*

Singh lost an appeal against the prison sentence in July 2024. Reportedly, the court accepted that Singh has mental disorders, and dismissed challenges that the sentencing judge had made mistakes on the vulnerability of one of the victims and the extent of planning of the crimes. The court also concluded that the judge had been right to find that Singh is dangerous. Singh has apparently made 72 complaints while at HMP Downview (a female prison), with 11 upheld and four partially upheld, and the judges said Singh has “exhibited challenging behaviour in custody” as “misgendering which would happen from time to time”. In the Evening Standard’s article, Singh is immediately described as “a transgender man who tricked three women into sex” and it is then further clarified that Singh was “born female as Hannah Walters, and now lives as a trans man.” In contrast, a recent Evening Standard article on the conviction of deranged trans-identified male murderer Scarlet Blake, no mention is made of Blake’s transgender status and the headline is “Cat-killing woman guilty of murdering man as he walked home from night out” – i.e. one rule for violent male trans individuals and another rule for violent female trans individuals.
