Alfie Howe, a male who identifies as a transgender woman, was convicted in at Norwich Crown Court of four counts of distributing indecent photos of a child, three counts of making indecent photos of a child and one offence of possessing a prohibited image of a child.

In yet another case of the the trans Get Out of Jail Free card, the judged sentenced Howe to two years in prison, but suspended it for two years. The judge also ordered a 12-month mental health treatment requirement, an accredited (presumably sex offender) programme of up to 40 sessions and 150 hours unpaid work. Howe, aged 25 and from Norwich, was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and put on the sex offenders register, also indefinitely.

Howe’s barrister cited the usual blether about him going through a “difficult time” at the time of the offending and was “awaiting surgery” etc. The court also heard Howe has ADHD and autism, felt “socially isolated” and was in a “very dark and bad place”. 

Acting on a tip-off, police found more than 500 images depicting child sexual abuse on Howe’s devices – at least 228 of which were Category A, the most serious category that depict the rape of babies or children. Also discovered were “lurid” and “graphic” conversations with other paedophiles about “abusing children”, including babies, who appeared in the images. Media coverage indicates that the court heard the Telegram app, which users can set messages to self-destruct, was used by Howe in some of the messages sent.

Local coverage named Howe as a “Norfolk man transitioning to live as woman” – whatever that means, a conviction for possessing images of children being raped would certainly suggest ‘man’ rather than ‘woman’.
