James Julian / Jane Pridham, a female who identifies as a trans man, was convicted of harassment at Poole Magistrates’ Court in 2009. Julian was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison and a restraining order was imposed until further notice.

The court heard that Julian, 44, had “become fixated” with a male nurse on the Bournemouth East community mental health team but their professional relationship broke down when Julian (who was subsequently discharged from mental health care) sent offensive letters and messages to the nurse and subjected him to “a barrage of abuse” as he accompanied an elderly patient during a shopping trip in Boscombe. Letters and phone calls sent to the nurse’s workplace also blamed him for an overdose Julian took.

Julian told the court of “a transgender sexuality problem,” and said they just wanted to be friends and felt shunned by the nurse ignoring them, saying  “All I wanted was an explanation. I felt I was being victimised. I didn’t mean any harm to anyone.”

Magistrates ruled Julian had pursued an “intrusive and alarming” campaign against the health worker.
