Kelsea Broadfoot

Kelsea Broadfoot, a violent male who identifies as a transgender woman, was convicted at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court in November 2024 of possessing a bladed article in a public place.

Broadfoot, aged 53 and from Ryde, was arrested on suspicion of multiple offences after police were called to an incident in August 2024 where Broadfoot was drunkenly brandishing a 66cm Samurai sword in the street with his trousers dropped to his ankles.

Broadfoot claimed not to remember the act and blamed mental health issues, exacerbated by recent bereavement and estrangement from family members. Broadfoot has apparently not been in trouble with the law for 20 years.

Despite previously appearing in local coverage (here and here) as an out trans person, media coverage failed to mention that Broadfoot is a trans-identified male and included headlines such as ‘Drunk woman with Samurai sword dropped her trousers in Ryde street’ which, as usual, readers robustly challenged in the comments.

The sword was ordered to be destroyed and sentencing will take place in January 2025.

*Update March 2025*

At sentencing on 4 March at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court,  Broadfoot received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, with an order to complete an alcohol treatment order.

Presiding magistrate, David Wilson, told Broadfoot: “To carry a knife around in a public place is serious enough, but to carry a Samurai sword in public will have caused alarm.”

The local paper amended how they referred to Broadfoot in coverage, with the headline reading ‘Isle of Wight trans woman drops trousers and swings Samurai sword’ as opposed to the previous version referring to the defendant as ‘Isle of Wight woman dropped her trousers in Samurai sword incident’.
