John Murphy, a male transvestite, was convicted in 2009 at the High Court in Edinburgh of possessing, making and distributing indecent images of children. He was jailed for 2 years.

Drama teacher Murphy, 44, was among six members of Scotland’s biggest paedophile network to be jailed. One of the ringleaders, James Rennie, was the CEO of LGBT Youth Scotland (LGBTYS) who receive millions of pounds of funding from the Scottish Government and remain an influential source of materials taught in Scottish schools. Rennie was was jailed for life with a minimum of 13 years at the High Court in Edinburgh in October 2009 after being convicted of appalling sexually-motivated crimes against children, including repeatedly filming himself sexually abusing a baby from the age of three months. Lothian and Borders Police identified up to 70 contacts of the network throughout the UK and abroad.

Murphy originally lost his job as as a teacher in 1995 after being convicted of engaging in an indecent act with two other men in Glasgow city centre. He was struck off by the General Teaching Council for Scotland but the conviction was overturned a few months later leading to Murphy’s return to teaching. He reportedly taught vulnerable special needs children at an Ayrshire school.
