Benn/Brooke Marsden
Benn/Brooke Marsden, a male who identified as non-binary, was remanded to HMP Lincoln (a Category B men’s prison) on 10 January 2022, charged with sexual and common assault. A few days earlier Marsden had been arrested and taken into police custody after being found naked in the street holding a large kitchen knife to his throat. It was also alleged that Marsden had damaged a vehicle and threatened a member of the public.
During assessment by a health professional at the prison, Marsden apparently talked about having an undiagnosed personality disorder and had considered gender reassignment after becoming confused about his sexuality. Although not known to community mental health services, Marsden said that he had previously received counselling for sexual abuse. Marsden also told the nurse about planning to plead guilty at his next court appearance.
Benn/Brooke Marsden died of natural causes (heart disease) aged 33, on 14 January 2022, at HMP Lincoln. Link to the independent Prison Ombudsman report into the death which was published in 2024. Link to 2023 inquest.
