Bronwyn/Anarlyn Jones
Bronwyn/Bron/Anarlyn/Anarlin Jones, a violent female who identifies as a transgender man, was convicted in December 2024 at Portsmouth Crown Court, of the murder of Anna Jones (Jones’ mother) in May 2023.
Jones had previously attempted to strangle Mrs Jones in October 2022 but charges were dropped after the attack was deemed to be a “psychotic episode”.
Anna Jones, 44, was found dead at her flat in Petersfield, Hampshire, at about 20:00 BST on 9 May, 2023. She died from “overwhelming blood loss” from the multiple savage stab wounds that Jones had inflicted to her head, neck, trunk and arms with a pruning knife ‘in a fit of alcohol-fuelled rage.’
Jones, 26, had initially admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility but denied murder, telling the 999 operator variously that Mrs Jones had begged to be killed due to illness or that demons were responsible. However, Mrs Jones had multiple defensive injuries and Jones reportedly acknowledged that “alcohol made him [sic] violent and aggressive”. Jones was in the care of a community mental health team and was using anti-psychotic medication at the time of the killing, but did not submit psychiatric evidence in defence.
Media coverage at the time of Anna Jones’ murder reported that one of her two daughters, (named as Bronwyn Jones) had been arrested and charged with her murder, but by December 2023, coverage was using the name Anarlin/Anarlyn and they/them pronouns for the suspect. The BBC also appears to have amended headlines which initially read “Woman admits killing mother but denies murder” to “Defendant admits killing mother but denies murder”. Unlike recent coverage of the trans-identified male murderer Scarlet Blake‘s trial, the BBC mentioned early in trial coverage that Anarlyn Jones was “formerly known as Bronwyn Jones but now identifies as male” and used male pronouns. The articles also do not call Jones transgender or a man, avoiding the issue by using e.g. ‘killer’ or ‘the defendant’.
