Rachel Newton

Rachel Richard Newton, a violent male who identifies as a trans woman, was convicted at Leeds Crown Court in April 2021 of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, causing or inciting a boy under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, four counts of taking indecent images of a child and making/possessing indecent images of children.

Newton, 43 was jailed for four years and six months, ordered to sign the sex offenders indefinitely and made subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

Newton was listed in court documentation as “female” and therefore these serious sexual offences against children will likely be counted within female crime figures. It remains unknown whether Newton has been sent to a male or female prison. Media coverage referred to Newton as a paedophile rather than explicitly ascribe the crimes to a woman, but used female pronouns while also captioning a photo of Newton as having been ‘born a man but identifies as a woman’.

As highlighted by a Twitter user, four of the top five Google results for women on trial for sexual offences during April 2021 were actually trials of male sex offenders such as Newton. See also Matthew Burren/Alex Smith, Denen Anderson and Jessica Smith.
