Oliver Smith
Oliver Smith, a violent male who identifies as transgender, was convicted at Portsmouth Crown Court on 4 November 2024 of multiple serious sexual offences perpetrated against a young girl. The offences included rape, attempted rape, false imprisonment, committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence, threatening another with a blade, false imprisonment and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. Smith was also convicted of breaching a previously imposed Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
At sentencing in January 2025, Smith was branded a danger to women and jailed for 12 years with a further six year and six month supervision period to be imposed upon release. It emerged that Smith had written a detailed and ‘deeply disturbing’ manifesto planning the attack, had a ‘long-standing pornography addiction’, had no friends and had also been previously convicted of voyeurism and possessing sexual images. Smith escaped a jail sentence for these offences nine months earlier in January 2024 at Taunton Crown Court, instead receiving a community order and SHPO. It was this SHPO that Smith breached by being found in possession of a second mobile phone without informing the police.
Smith, 21, had lain in wait in woods in September 2024 for the young, vulnerable female victim and attacked her at knifepoint as she walked to school, putting her in fear for her life. After raping her in a prolonged, violent ordeal, he forced her to wash with river water in an attempt to remove forensic evidence, before absconding to Scotland. Media coverage also revealed that Smith denigrated the victim – a 14 year old child – calling her a ‘slut’, and made derogatory remarks about her genitals.
In a victim impact statement read to the court by a barrister, the girl, who was 14 at the time, said: “I am now paranoid. I feel like someone is always behind me. “I don’t look at myself in the mirror. I hate anyone touching me. I like to be alone now.” Her parents’ statement described having to run into her room due to “piercing screams” from her night terrors.
Between November 2024 where the headline read ‘Man pleads guilty to raping teen in nature area’ and reports of the sentencing in January 2025, BBC coverage of Smith’s crimes changed to solely using they/them pronouns as per the Hampshire police’s press release – despite the victim’s testimony in court very clearly describing her depraved assailant as a man and using male pronouns.
Smith is the second trans-identified individual from Bordon (a small town in Hampshire) to be sentenced in January 2025 for appalling violence against women/girls – see also Bronwn/Anarlyn Jones who was jailed for 20+ years for the vicious murder of Anna Jones (Jones’ mother) in 2023.
