Barrie/Mallory Wilks

Barrie/Mallory Wilks, a violent male who identifies as non-binary, was convicted at Swansea Crown Court in May 2021 of common assault of an emergency worker and battery of an emergency worker.

Police officers had gone to speak to Wilks, 35, in connection with other matters on 3 April, 2021 when Wilks launched an extremely violent and prolonged attack on two police officers, one of whom was so seriously injured that he had to wear a full leg brace for six weeks and remain on desk duties, putting his future career with the police in jeopardy. The incident apparently happened just days after Wilks, 35, had been given a community order for a previous attack on two other police officers.

Judge Geraint Walters urged Wilks to get help to tackle underlying mental health issues after a report identified probable post-traumatic stress disorder along with elements of a personality disorder and emotional instability, as well as alcohol and drug misuse.

Wilks was sentenced to four months in prison for each of the two assaults on the PCs. The judge also revoked the community order imposed by Welshpool Magistrates Court and resentenced Wilks to a total of four months in prison for those matters to run consecutively with the new sentence, making an overall custodial sentence of 12 months.

In the previous attack in 2020, Wilks (a retained firefighter at the time) had stolen keyrings from Newtown Fire Station in Aberystwyth and threatened a firefighter with a large wooden pole after having accused colleagues of homophobia and was then arrested at the same location on November 2. In Aberystwyth on November 9, Wilks then violently resisted arrest by kicking and biting two police officers and subsequently received the two-year community order and fined £1,000 at Welshpool Magistrates Court in February, 2021.

In total, Wilks had two previous convictions for seven offences including for theft, criminal damage, and assaulting police officers – these offences arose from incidents at Aberystwyth fire station.
